SUMMARY:First Friday Art Opening: Ree Nancarrow & Nancy Hausle Johnson
DESCRIPTION:POSTPONED FROM JULY 4 TO JULY 11 DUE TO THE NENANA COMPLEX FIRES.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRee Nancarrow is an Alaskan artist with a natural history background.  She creates art quilts using personally-designed fabric\, custom printing\, and richly textured\, quilted surfaces.\n\n\nArtist’s Statement\n\n\nOur world is one of constant change. We continue to witness the traditional changing of seasons and now the effects of global warming and climate change as seen in erosion\, forest fires and other environmental events. All of these are central to my artistic expression. My work varies from abstract to representational\, usually seeking to depict the character of a place or life form found in a particular environment\, rather than portraying actual places in the world.   \nI make art quilts\, drawing imagery from a lifetime of experience drawing\, silk-screening\, stenciling\, stamping\, painting\, dyeing fabric\, and photographing. Learning to design on the iPad after receiving a Rasmuson Foundation Individual Artist’s Award in 2020 gave me the skills to create the fabrics for my work digitally and intuitively\, often creating new color palettes to better express my mood. My elaboratively quilted surfaces enhance the rich imagery and detail of each piece. \n\n \n\nNANCY HAUSLE-JOHNSON Nancy Hausle-Johnson has been a ceramic tile artist in Fairbanks\, Alaska since 1985.  She works with scientists\, artists and music composers to produce public art.  Her tile murals have been featured in numerous art shows and Percent for Art commissions for community centers\, hospitals\, libraries\, and schools. She has degrees in art education and commercial art and has taught art in schools K through 12. She has been Artist in Residence at Toolik Lake Field Station\, an arctic research station operated by the Institute of Arctic Biology at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. She also designs custom murals and tables for private clients.

SUMMARY:Tonglen Tunes: Ryan LittleEagle
DESCRIPTION:Ryan LittleEagle\, a traveling Indigenous singer-songwriter and musician\, weaves together the traditional and the contemporary\, the ancestral and the modern\, into the vast tapestry of American music. A product of Canyon Lake\, Texas\, Ryan’s journey traverses the heartlands of America\, from the open plains of the Midwest to the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. Yet\, his spirit finds itself at home outside the Black Hills of South Dakota\, where the echoes of his ancestors resonate through the prairie. \nInspired by storytellers like Johnny Cash\, George Strait and Jason Isbell\, he carved a niche in the realm of Country and Americana music\, blending the sounds of his Native heritage with tales of the human experience. For over 15 years\, he has roamed the roads\, sharing his soul-stirring compositions with audiences across the nation\, playing hundreds of shows yearly. \nSharing stages with legends of Native music\, Ryan has garnered accolades and awards\, including the prestigious Native American Music Awards and the Canadian Indigenous Music Awards. Additionally\, his musical prowess was recognized by the Taino Tribal Nation for his representation of the community through his music. \nWith five studio albums to his name\, including his recent debut singer-songwriter album Native Americana\, LittleEagle’s musical legacy continues to evolve\, resonating with audiences far and wide. His latest single\, “Deeper Than The Holler”; epitomizes his enduring commitment to his style of storytelling and melody \nBeyond the musical stage\, LittleEagle’s role as a cultural educator and traditional dancer underscores his reverence for his heritage. He strives to continue to raise awareness of Indigenous issues\, championing the voices of his people with grace and dignity. \nIn essence\, Ryan LittleEagle stands as more than a musician: he is an ambassador of his community\, a custodian of tradition\, and a bridge between worlds. Through his music\, he invites us to embrace the richness of culture through the power of storytelling and song.

SUMMARY:Tonglen Tunes: Nancy Bataille
DESCRIPTION:After a long hiatus from playing music (work\, raise kids\, build\, repeat) the play music light switched back on some time ago and it stuck.  After more than 45 winters in Alaska\, Nancy now plays most of the winter season with her band The Silvahtones on the Big Island\, and the rest of the year with her trio The Turnagains when they’re in AK\, and other fabulous musical friends wherever a good jam is happening.  Almost all acoustic: fiddle\, mandolin\, bass\, guitar (and keyboards now and then) with sweet vocal harmonies. Call it Americana – a mixture of folk\, blues\, country\, bluegrass and rock.  Solo\, Nancy plays guitar and sings.  Lots of Emmylou Harris\, Lucinda Williams\, Doc Watson\, Roseanne Cash\, John Hiatt\, Gillian Welch\, just to name a few.  She’ll toss in a few originals too. Come on out\, and bring your instrument if you want to jam after!
