SUMMARY:Presenter: Scott Weidensaul
DESCRIPTION:Scott Weidensaul is the author of nearly 30 critically acclaimed books on natural history\, including the Pulitzer Prize finalist “Living on the Wind” and his latest\, the New York Times bestseller “A World on the Wing.” Scott is a contributing editor for Audubon and writes for a variety of other publications\, including BWD and Living Bird\, and is a Fellow of the American Ornithological Society. \nAn active field researcher and longtime bird bander focusing on bird migration\, he directs a major research project tracking the migration of saw-whet owls\, and is part of a continental effort to learn why more and more western hummingbirds are wintering in the East. He is a cofounder of Project SNOWstorm\, an ambitious effort to learn more about snowy owl migration. Scott is a frequent visitor to Alaska for more than 40 years\, where his work has taken him into almost every corner of the state\, including Denali\, where he helps direct Critical Connections\, a study of the park’s migrant birds. A native of Pennsylvania\, he and his wife Amy now live in New Hampshire. \nScott’s evening presentation will explore the wonders and dynamics of bird migration\, and a light-hearted look at his field research – a lifetime spent\, as he says\, “messing around with birds for fun and science.”

SUMMARY:Book Signing: Tom Walker "The Wanderer"
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Artisan Cafe.\n \n“A precise\, lyrical account of an exceptional animal’s life.”—Bryce Andrews\, author of Down from the Mountain \nFollow one wolf’s incredible journey 2\,600 miles across Alaska and Canada \nThe Wanderer is the first book ever to chart a wolf’s movements for an extended period of time\, almost to the day. Award-winning author Tom Walker draws on unparalleled access to a research study of wolves in Alaska to share the story of Wolf 258\, nicknamed “the Wanderer.” Relying on a GPS collar that recorded the animal’s coordinates each day\, biologists tracked Wolf 258 as he moved through the wilderness—-and\, astonishingly\, traveled more than 2600 miles in less than six months. \nThrough the lens of one wolf’s epic journey\, Walker highlights connections to terrain\, history\, looming threats\, and other animals. He recounts the animal’s compelling final months\, while examining the broader complexity of the species’ struggle for survival. The Wanderer explores not only the natural history of wolves but the relationship of people—Indigenous\, pioneers and settlers\, biologists\, politicians—with this predator\, shedding light on the long-established northern traditions of trapping and hunting\, the tangled politics of wolf management\, and how artificial borders fail to contain this iconic species.

SUMMARY:Tonglen Tunes: Emily Anderson
DESCRIPTION:Like stumbling into a rose garden on a trek through the arctic\, listeners of Emily Anderson’s music find themselves helplessly lifted into a world so hauntingly familiar\, and yet so enchantingly curious. Anderson’s music is as shaped by this whimsical perspective as it is by her musical credentials. A multi-instrumentalist trained at the Berklee College of Music in Boston\, Anderson fills her songs with images of nature\, hope\, and the solar system\, not to mention a few puns. Anderson hails from Fairbanks\, Alaska\, and now splits her time between her hometown and Los Angeles. \nHer upbringing in a tight-knit community has shared her musical perspective. One radio reviewer remarked of her 2017 full-length album Simple Things\, “Emily Anderson’s music shatters the imagery you might have of surviving the long dark winters while living in Fairbanks\, AK. One might expect dark introspection or a songwriter who bites back at life\, but the songs on Simple Things are warm and emotive.” \nIn recent years\, Anderson has lent her skills to video games and game trailers Calico and The Stars Between Us\, and shared bills with Danielle Ate the Sandwich\, Peter Mulvey\, and Aurora Birch. She’s toured across Alaska\, the west coast\, and Canada. She has also released three new singles\, “Sarah\,” “Gold\,” and\, on February 5\, 2021\, “Hugs.” The second\, “Gold\,” has been placed in a national ad campaign with Miller Lite\, and was a finalist in both the American Songwriter and Songwriting University Song Contests. These songs\, which tackle subjects like grief\, mental illness\, friendship\, and pandemic isolation\, are optimistic as well as raw. Anderson’s music reflects her determination to find light in tough times.
