SUMMARY:Tonglen Tunes: Tim Easton
DESCRIPTION:American songwriter Tim Easton was born on the Canadian border in upstate New York and spent his formative years living in Tokyo\, Japan and Akron\, Ohio. Traveling early and often\, he learned the ways of the road and rails and spent 7 years as a bonafide troubadour\, making his way around Europe\, playing the streets and clubs\, living in Paris\, London\, Madrid\, Prague\, Dublin\, and wherever he laid his hat. It was this period of time when he developed his songwriting style – folk based storytelling and personal traveling tales\, often peppered with bold confessions or “tell it as it is” reality. Rolling Stone Magazine praised him as “having a novelist’s sense of humanity.” \nReturning to his roots in North America\, moving to New York City and then Los Angeles\, he signed with New West Records and released five critically acclaimed solo albums starting with 2001’s “The Truth About Us\,” which featured three fourths of WILCO as the backing band. Invitations to be a support act from mentors Lucinda Williams and John Hiatt arrived. Easton settled in the burgeoning art and music scene of Joshua Tree\, California between worldwide tours. After becoming a Father and re-locating to Nashville\, Easton recorded an album for THIRTY TIGERS (“NOT COOL” 2013)\, which accented the stripped down Memphis & Sun Studios sound of the Tennessee Three. His next album 2016’s “AMERICAN FORK\,” was a grand departure from his previous efforts\, featuring a fully flushed out backing band with elaborate songs arrangements. Next came “Paco & The Melodic Polaroids\,” a stripped down\, direct to lacquer LP of love songs to his beloved Gibson J-45 named “Paco.” That was followed up with 2020’s full band recording “You Don’t Really Know Me\,” beginning a new relationship with Oklahoma based Black Mesa Records\, which will re-release “Not Cool” and Easton’s solo debut “Special 20” on vinyl in 2023. In between composing songs for his next original album and the re-issue projects to be released\, a twenty song interim project called “NORTH AMERICAN SONGWRITER” will arrive early in 2023. This double LP–the first two volumes in a series–will feature acoustic recordings of favorite songs from his vast catalog of original material. Worldwide tour dates are a constant addition to the Tour page of TimEaston.com. \nEaston reached the milestone of having 100 Published original songs which he celebrated by releasing 100 solo performance videos on 100 consecutive days\, all posted on his personal YouTube channel. \nHe currently resides in Nashville\, Tennessee.

SUMMARY:Tonglen Tunes: Nancy Bataille
DESCRIPTION:After a long hiatus from playing music (work\, raise kids\, build\, repeat) the play music light switched back on some time ago and it stuck. After more than 45 winters in Alaska\, Nancy now plays most of the winter season with her band The Silvahtones on the Big Island\, and the rest of the year with her trio The Turnagains when they’re in AK\, and other fabulous musical friends wherever a good jam is happening. Almost all acoustic: fiddle\, mandolin\, bass\, guitar (and keyboards now and then) with sweet vocal harmonies. Call it Americana – a mixture of folk\, blues\, country\, bluegrass and rock. Solo\, Nancy plays guitar and sings. Lots of Emmylou Harris\, Lucinda Williams\, Doc Watson\, Roseanne Cash\, John Hiatt\, Gillian Welch\, just to name a few. She’ll toss in a few originals too. Come on out\, and bring your instrument if you want to jam after!

SUMMARY:Tonglen Tunes: Ryan LittleEagle
DESCRIPTION:Ryan LittleEagle\, a traveling Indigenous singer-songwriter and musician\, weaves together the traditional and the contemporary\, the ancestral and the modern\, into the vast tapestry of American music. A product of Canyon Lake\, Texas\, Ryan’s journey traverses the heartlands of America\, from the open plains of the Midwest to the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. Yet\, his spirit finds itself at home outside the Black Hills of South Dakota\, where the echoes of his ancestors resonate through the prairie. \nInspired by storytellers like Johnny Cash\, George Strait and Jason Isbell\, he carved a niche in the realm of Country and Americana music\, blending the sounds of his Native heritage with tales of the human experience. For over 15 years\, he has roamed the roads\, sharing his soul-stirring compositions with audiences across the nation\, playing hundreds of shows yearly. \nSharing stages with legends of Native music\, Ryan has garnered accolades and awards\, including the prestigious Native American Music Awards and the Canadian Indigenous Music Awards. Additionally\, his musical prowess was recognized by the Taino Tribal Nation for his representation of the community through his music. \nWith five studio albums to his name\, including his recent debut singer-songwriter album Native Americana\, LittleEagle’s musical legacy continues to evolve\, resonating with audiences far and wide. His latest single\, “Deeper Than The Holler”; epitomizes his enduring commitment to his style of storytelling and melody \nBeyond the musical stage\, LittleEagle’s role as a cultural educator and traditional dancer underscores his reverence for his heritage. He strives to continue to raise awareness of Indigenous issues\, championing the voices of his people with grace and dignity. \nIn essence\, Ryan LittleEagle stands as more than a musician: he is an ambassador of his community\, a custodian of tradition\, and a bridge between worlds. Through his music\, he invites us to embrace the richness of culture through the power of storytelling and song.

SUMMARY:Tonglen Tunes: Ron Grotos
DESCRIPTION:Joining us again from the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival! \n \nRon Drotos began improvising on the piano as a child\, creating the dinosaur sounds he heard in his imagination. He spent his teenage years playing in jazz and rock bands\, and in 1985 received a Bachelor’s degree in Music Composition from The University of Connecticut\, where he studied with Hale Smith. During this time\, Ron studied jazz piano with Dr. Billy Taylor\, Walter Bishop\, Jr.\, Harold Danko\, and Ellen Rowe. From 1987-88\, Ron worked as assistant to the baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan\, and then began to pursue a music career of his own. \nAfter moving to New York City in 1989\, Ron served as Associate Music Director and created orchestrations for the Broadway musical Swinging On A Star\, which received a Tony Award® nomination for Best Musical in 1995. Additional Broadway credits include Smokey Joe’s Café\, The Life\, and Fosse. Ron has orchestrated for the New York Pops Orchestra\, with whom he has appeared several times at Carnegie Hall. He has been featured as Music Director on the 92nd St. Y’s famed “Lyrics and Lyricists” series\, and has performed with vocalists Julius LaRosa\, Judy Collins\, Brian Stokes Mitchell\, Nell Carter\, and Giacomo Gates. In addition\, Ron has taught at the Fairbanks (Alaska) Summer Arts Festival since 1999\, where he has been inducted into the festival’s Hall of Fame.

SUMMARY:Tonglen Tunes: FSAF American Roots Artists
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an unforgettable evening of contemporary and traditional roots music featuring Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival American Roots artists Stepwise\, Ryan Bowers\, and Emily Anderson. \nEmily Anderson\nLike stumbling into a rose garden on a trek through the arctic\, listeners of Emily Anderson’s\nmusic find themselves helplessly lifted into a world so hauntingly familiar\, and yet so\nenchantingly curious. Alaska grown and LA based\, Anderson has recently released a\nsophomore record\, “Salt & Water”. Her single “Gold” was featured in a national Miller Lite\ncampaign and a number of her works have been featured in video games (Calico\, The Stars\nBetween Us). Her poignant lyrics and intimate indie soundscapes are akin to Regina Spektor\nruminating over coffee with Phoebe Bridgers. Emily is an educator and performer with a passion\nfor making music fun and accessible. She teaches private lessons in songwriting\, ukulele\, and\nvoice and loves helping students reach their musical goals. \n \nRyan Bowers \nRyan Bowers is a bassist\, singer/songwriter\, and music educator from Fairbanks\, Alaska. He\nstarted singing as a child\, started playing for dances at 13\, and got his first bass at 17. Since\nthen\, he has been in a list of bands which includes Slightly Askew\, Ice Jam\, Outbound\, Lost\nDog Stringband\, The Xtra-Tuffs\, Eel House\, Rock Bottom Stompers\, The Norris Bowers Band\,\nand Ryan Bowers and the Brain Trust. He studied voice at UAF\, bass and songwriting at\nBerklee College of Music\, and graduated from UAF with a BA in Music. He has toured and\nrecorded with many groups\, and just released his first solo album Sweet Calamity\, recorded and\nmixed in Fairbanks at 10th Planet Studio. \nRyan has experience in a wide variety of styles\, including bluegrass\, old-time\, country\, folk\,\ncontra dance\, rock\, indie\, jazz\, pop\, and chamber music. He has taught music camps\,\nworkshops\, and lessons since 2008\, and taught at Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival in 2016 and\n2017. He is currently acting as an American Roots Music Coordinator for the Fairbanks Summer\nArts Festival\, and as President of the Fairbanks Folk Fest Board of Directors. Ryan likes his\npancakes with yogurt instead of syrup\, and eats his cereal dry. \n \nStepwise\nStepwise is a traditional Celtic folk band consisting of Liam Lewis (mandolin\, guitar\, fiddle\,\nvoice) and Olivia Breidenthal (fiddle and voice). They perform a mixture of traditional Irish\nsongs with tight vocal harmonies and traditional Irish tune sets. Olivia is a practitioner of the\nGalway fiddle style with influences including Kevin Burke\, the Kane Sisters\, and Liz Carroll.\nTogether\, their instrumental arrangements feature intricate twin fiddles or groovy rhythm\nguitar fit for a traditional Ceili or the discerning ears of an Irish-enthusiast audience.
