COVID-19 Information and Protocols

We look forward to hosting you in our remote corner of the world. Everyone has been impacted in some way or form due to the COVID-19 outbreak. There is some important information we want to communicate to all our overnight guests before your arrival.

Your Health Care
Tonglen Lake’s mission is to share the best of its remote environment. That environment, like all of Alaska, includes both friendly and unfriendly microbes. And, yes, Covid-19 can hitch a ride to Tonglen Lake, by no design of ours. By staying at Tonglen Lake you are accepting responsibility for your personal health care. By becoming a guest, you are opening yourself to the unique Tonglen experience.

We want your visit to be safe and memorable.  We practice hygiene appropriate for our rural and rustic setting. We cannot, however, assure you of a germ or Covid-19 free environment. Please take such precautions as are advised by Alaska’s government leaders and your health care provider.

State of Alaska Travel Mandate
The State of Alaska’s 14-day mandatory quarantine for any traveler entering Alaska has been replaced by a requirement that all travelers to Alaska must arrive with proof of a negative COVID test within 72 hours of travel. Starting August 11, travelers have the following options:
- Test 72 hours before departure, and upload negative results onto the Alaska Travel Portal.
- If tested 72 hours before departure and awaiting results, travelers will need to upload proof of test taken into the Alaska Travel Portal and quarantine at their own expense while waiting.
- If a non-resident arrives without a pre-test, testing is available at airports for $250 per test. The traveler will be required to quarantine at their own expense while waiting on results.

Current information can be found on the State of Alaska’s COVID Information webpages: Alaska COVID Mandates AND Alaska Traveler Information.

If you fall ill during your time at Tonglen Lake, COVID-19 tests are available by appointment at our local Interior Community Health Center in the town of Healy ~30 minutes north of Tonglen Lake. If you test positive, you will be required by the State of Alaska to self isolate at your own expense in a designated location, and you will not be able to travel unless cleared by public health.

Our Protocols
Social distancing: the overnight host will be living in the lower level apartment at the Tonglen Lake guest house. If anything arises during your stay, or if you have any questions about your time in Denali, they will be available and happy to help.

Face masks: We will wear a face mask when interacting with your party. We have disposable face masks and reusable face coverings available for you to use if needed (some tours may require them for all or part of their activity).

Sanitizing and cleaning: The guest house will have a 24 hour period between overnight guests to allow for thorough sanitation. All spaces will be cleaned with sanitizing solution, followed by all “touch” surfaces being disinfected with a bleach solution. All flatware and dishes will be sanitized in the dishwasher between stays. Hand sanitizer will be provided to use in the guest house.
There will not be daily housekeeping, but we will be able to replace linens and towels as needed.

Upon your arrival we will have you sign a waiver releasing Tonglen Lake Lodge from any claim for contracted disease and for claims stemming from the inherent nature of rustic and rural living. We trust you to be aware of these risks prior to travel, and we will take all necessary steps to help keep you and our community healthy.
